Trommenattrunden (aka The Classic)

Nesbyen, Nes, Viken, Norway
16.5km|786m ◢ ◣ 787m|11.09.2015

Description

Technically demanding high mountain trail with lots of rocks, roots, bog and a couple of steep bends. Because of. lots of bog terrain, this trip is only recommended when it is dry in the mountains. The trip requires both technique and endurance (possibly an electric bike), but at the same time offers good views, good flow and some very fun descents!

Tips for easier natural paths if you have less experience:

Skaraåsen, Gol (https://trailguide.net/3)

Rauddalsfjellet, Gol (https://trailguide.net/346)

Vardefjell, Nesbyen (https://trailguide.net/3937)

The drum night round can be cycled both ways, but we are keeping a button on cycling it "against the sun". You start either at Nesfjellet Golf (here you will find a bike wash and bike rack), at Bøgaset or Nystølkroken Café. The description here starts from the Nystølkroken café.

From Nystølkroken cafe, cycle out of the parking lot and keep left and left. Follow the road south for approx. 1 km to an x junction (there is also a car park here) where you cycle straight ahead / straight ahead. Keep left on this road and cycle over the "top". Turn left just before the last cabin at the top of the hill and follow the cart track down to the water Midtre Båtstjern.

Where the cart road ends, 2 trails begin. You take the one on the left marked Trommenatten. Here you cycle for a short distance on a path/bad carriage road. after a short kilometre, there is a steep climb of around 100 meters which has to be pushed. After the climb, there will be some small technical cycling further up and you will eventually reach Snaufjellet and soon see the drum night with a clearly visible cairn. From here on, it's a mixture of a little technical and nice flow.

The last climb up to Trommenatten is steep but can be cycled with a bit of luck and power in the legs. From the top of Trommenatten, the view is fantastic. Roll on over the top and down again a short descent, at the bottom you have to turn right at an indistinct path junction, the most marked path goes straight ahead but it is wrong. Further on, there is narrow singletrack and after a small bog and up a bend of about 50 meters there is another slightly indistinct junction. Turn right here as well and up a small hill that turns left and you will see the day's second peak, Smylifjell. At the foot of this ridge, you have to cross an approximately 4 meter wet marsh. After crossing this keep straight on/slightly right until you reach the path again. Follow it further up until it becomes too steep. About 100 meters pushing to the top. From the top you keep left and you see what awaits. A long hilly ridge with a very pleasant trail. There are some junctions on the way down, follow the map to see the correct route. Down at the bottom you keep left, follow red dots on stones. You cross a small stream and start cycling in birch forest. On a small mound with a small cairn keep right at the intersection. Here it is nice hilly forest cycling until you come down to a cart road which you follow to a gravel road. You have here reached Bøgaset.

From here, just follow the signposted route back to Nystølen. Some gravel road and some built path back. If you start at Bøgaset, you would end with a path

Access

From Nesbyen, first follow signs for Tunhovd, then Nesfjellet Alpinsenter. Navigate either to Nesfjellet Golf, Bøgaset or Nystølkroken Café, depending on where you want to start your trip. It costs NOK 20 in tolls to drive to Nystølkroken Café.

Knut Hoem rated Trommenattrunden (aka The Classic) very good. Very nice track, we did it counter clockwise which I think is the better option. Should be able to bike about everything except about 200m where you have to push the bike. My girlfriend ended up pushing a bit more than that since she just started biking. 17.jul.2021

Håvard P Ersen reported the conditions at The Classic i Nes Sørmark as very good. Fantastisk runde i dag. 16.jul.2020
