Forbidden Trail from Pico de las Nieves to Playa del Inglés

Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, Canarias, Spain
36.9km|965m ◢ ◣ 2831m|05.01.2016

Description

The 37 km long trail is not really forbidden . But Free Motion Bike Centre in Playa del Inglés, do not offer guiding. Part of the route are too exposed.

The trail starts at the highest point of the island, Pico de las Nieves (1949 MASL). The trail passes the mountain town San Bartolome and hits the paved road near Ayagaures (300 MASL). From there you are following paved road for 15 km to Playa del Inglés. With more than 500 meters of climbing along the way, you will have more than 200 meters descent on trails and pathways.

I have given the trail EXPERT rating (BLACK). So be careful, and keep the group together. You are advised to use a full suspension bike. There are plenty of rocks and steep downhills.

Access

Pico de las Nieves where the route starts can be reached by car about 50 km or 1 hour from Playa del Inglés. For a shorter ride you can be picked up by car both near San Bartolome and in Ayagaures.

You will pass many crossroads and path splits along this route. It is absolutely important to follow the GPS track and to use a GPS unit or app that you trust and know well.

I have ended the GPS track in a roundabout between Maspalomas and Playa. I trust that you can find your destination from there.

Patrik Johansson rated Forbidden Trail from Pico de las Nieves to Playa del Inglés ok. Unfortunately, this trail is now actually forbidden. Apparently, they have decided to make a national park prohibiting biking on the part above and north of Cruz Grande, and also from Cruz Grande to San Bartolomé de Tirajana there are signs on the trail that biking is forbidden. The part from San Bartolomé and further south seems to still be allowed and is well worth the trip. Quite technical and rocky in a lot of places, and very exposed in others but tones of fun for a good rider on a decent full suspension bike. I have done this trail some years back as well, before regulations, and the part that is still allowed is the best part anyway. The top includes a lot of walking path with laid out steps and stones making it less fun to bike. Will update rating to very good if trail is modified to exclude top part.24.nov.2023
